PostSubject: Sprott shaw or Stenberg?   Mon 11 Aug 2008, 8:43 pm

Hey everyone, well I have being trying to get into the LPN program and am planning to start in January 2009......I would have rather gone to a public school but their is about 2 year waitlist for VCC, so I have decided to go to either Stenberg or Sprott Shaw. I cannot find any reviews for Stenberg online so I was just wondering if anyone from this website has gone to either of these schools and the good or bad info you can give...thanks Smile

PostSubject: Stenberg vs Sprott Shaw   Fri 22 Aug 2008, 5:22 pm

Hi!
I am currently a student of Sprott-Shaw Victoria, wrapping up my first semester. I would recommend SSCC, if you can afford it. I also chose private college because of the wait lists at Camosun (2 years). SSCC is good, all the instructors are RN's, which I really appreciate, they know what they are talking about. The classes are laid out well, the different courses that run concurrently all complement each other, so when we're doing the Urinary System in A&P, we're doing catheter care in Nursing Lab. It works well. It is pretty intense, it's a 50 week program, two practicums and one preceptorship at the end.
I was originally enrolled in the RPN course at Stenberg, which is the reason I moved to Victoria. I was supposed to start May 2007, it was postponed 4 times with no ETA. I withdrew my application because it was too sketchy for the amount of money involved. I think it finally started Nov 2007 (6 months later). Sprott-shaw is good, at least the one in victoria!!!
Good luck with your decision!

I too want to start my PN in January 2009, but I have read some reviews online and I am worried about my decision to go with a private school. Money aside I just want a excellent education and really want to get started as soon as possible, avoiding wait lists. I know my options are to attend private but, is it worth it? Is Stenberg more reputable then Sprott Shaw (Surrey campuses) or vice versa? any info would be very helpful Wink

As an OUC/Okanagan College alumni (NOT LPN course) I was always amazed that the school could even function at all!!

Hello left hand, this is the right hand. Glad we met.

I did some ABE upgrading and when I ordered transcripts, they sent my old 94/95 ones as well. Too bad they we somebody else's transcripts! I am so lucky I had my originals. The "new" ones that they sent me had my grades well below "With Honours" as my 94/95 transcripts showed! So I glad I spotted that.

ALL my ABE courses ( 4 in total) had issues: My textbooks were lost every time and I had to do the dance to get my book deposit back, I had one of my ABE course changed as I enrolled in it. I was the "guinea pig" (actual quote from teacher) for a the 'new improved" course. Unfortunately the final exam material wasn't even close to the material I had been given. End result was that I passed but barley. Considering I was holding an A- going into the final exam......

Sprott Shaw is my choice for the LPN course this spring. Something this important to me and I just can't take the the chance that the disorganize chaos that is Okanagan College.

Wow, I just finished my LPN course at OC this past August, and the college is awesome!! I never had any problems AT ALL with any aspect of my course. From pre reqs, registration, etc, it was all smooth. My instructors were FABULOUS!! The whole course including clinicals is exactly what was promised to me. I was never once upset with the college or the LPN program.

Now, I've heard nothing but mediocre to BAD reviews about Sprott Shaw. Instructors coming and going all the time. No instructors for periods of time as they can't hold on to them. Extreme disorganization. Outdated supplies, tiny and under supplied nursing lab. Not to say that the LPN's that come from Sprott Shaw are bad. Far from it. Just not recieving the quaility of education they paid for.

I paid $4,600 for tuition/fees plus about $800 for books/supplies. Last I heard, Sprott Shaw was $21,500 for the LPN course. No contest in my books.

I have nothing but rave reviews for Okanagan College. Smile

You got a hell of a deal with OK. When I talked to them in September, they told me the cost of the course, in total including books, student fee's etc,e tc, would be over$10,000! As I recall, it was closer to $12,000. OK also does not include the CPR in its course.

Whatever though.

I dont' know where those figures come from. According to OC's website, the current TOTAL fees for the LPN program is $5258.94. The actual tuition is $4504.32. The extra is school fees. Books would be on top of that any run anywhere from $300 (all used books) to around $800 or so for all new books.

Here's a link http://www.okanagan.bc.ca/misc/tuition/TUITION20082009.PDF

The practical nursing fees are on page 28 of 28.

Best of luck with your program at Sprott Shaw.

I got those numbers from the admissions advisor at Okanagan College. The amount on the website is misleading.
As for ANY Okanagan College/OUC alumni, keep records of your transcripts, book deposits etc. Chances are the school will lose them or get it wrong in the future.

Well, the tuition and fees I paid was exactly what the website said it would be, not a penny more.

I'm wondering if maybe you're a recruiter for Sprott Shaw??

No, but I am betting you are a recruiter for OC.

Um, OC doesn't have or need recruiters. Students come to them. Only private schools need "recruiters" that get a huge commision from ripping students off by charging disgustingly high tuition fees for programs and then getting sub par education.

Google Sprott Shaw. You'll find tons of internet message boards that have current and former students telling how bad it is.

Give it a rest.
If I wanted disorganzied chaos, I know where to go-Okanagan College.
That school has lied to me, lost and altered transcripts, lost textbooks, tried to overhcarge me and delievered subpar education for the money I spent.
If you want to "buy into" OC, be my guest. Lots of people do. I know better.

Thanks for playing. Sleep

Good grief. Defensive much?

Go to Sprott Shaw. Pay $15,000 more than you need to. I really don't care. Doesn't affect my life in any way.

I only responded to your original message as I was surprised that someone had such an overall bad experience at OC when I had an overall excellent experience. I don't need to "buy into" OC. The school already has my respect and recommendation to future students. In fact, none of my class of 26 had anything bad to say about OC. I can't say I've heard the same for Sprott Shaw. Numerous disgruntled current and former students have bad reviews about it. OC will always have more applicants than available seats for the LPN program, so go to Sprott Shaw.

I hope you have a positive experience there. I hope it's all that you think it will be. You'll be an LPN in a year and a bit and that's great. It's a great profession for me so far. Best of luck. Smile

The real cost of Okanagan College from their 2008/2009 continuing studies flyer:

Keep in mind this is ONLY the 8 month LPN Access program for RCA's. Do your research CAREFULLY before you make any budget plans.

Apology accepted OgopogoLPN.

Ummmm, I didn't apologize. I didn't say anything to you that warranted any apology.

Anyways, since you went to all all the trouble of posting that page, I went to the trouble of calling the program director and asking why the tuition for the 8 month access program is so much higher than the generic LPN program in Kelown and Penticton.

The seats in this access program are not gov't subsidized as are the seats in the generic program at OC in Kelowna/Penticton/Salmon Arm which is why the tuition is so much higher. Just as the seats in the Sprott Shaw program are not gov't subsidized. Hence the $22,000 tuition for Sprott Shaw (although some of that must be kickbacks for the recruiters).

I then called OC Kelowna and confirmed that the actual tuition for the 12 month LPN program out of Kelowna and Penticton is indeed A TOTAL OF $5,258.94. The actual tuition itself being $4,504.32, the other $600 and change being student fees, etc.

Again, here is the link to the tuition fees at OC, the LPN tuition and other fees are on page 28:

http://www.okanagan.bc.ca/misc/tuition/TUITION20082009.PDF

So Alvis, once again, good luck with your $22,000 program at Sprott Shaw. Maybe you should do YOUR research before posting.

Smile
